According to our reporter, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is likely to greenlight only a single new state following the National and state assemblies’ legislative processes. Sources reveal Anioma State is the top contender, aiming to address long-standing marginalization in Nigeria’s South East.

Advocates, including Senator Ned Nwoko, urge a united Igbo front to support Anioma as the sixth South East state — a move seen as vital to fixing regional imbalances. Currently, the South East lags behind with only five states, fewer than other zones.

However, resistance remains strong from parts of Delta State, who fear losing political influence if Anioma shifts to the South East.
