President Bola Tinubu will today (Thursday) formally swear in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Naijaonpoint learnt that the ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 noon at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, and will be witnessed by members of the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly leaders, legal luminaries, civil society groups, and senior INEC officials.
One presidential aide who confirmed the development to Punch stated, “We’re preparing. It’s going to hold tomorrow (Thursday)… around 12:00 pm or 1 o’clock.”
Shortly after the inauguration, Amupitan is expected to hold his first official meeting with INEC directors at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a notice signed by INEC’s Deputy Director of Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, the meeting will take place by 1:30 p.m. in the INEC Conference Hall.
“In view of the above, members of the INEC Press Corps are invited to cover the opening ceremony of the event,” the notice stated.
President Tinubu had earlier explained that Amupitan was nominated for his apolitical stance, integrity, and track record of service.
The President, in a statement released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said, “President Tinubu told the council that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi, North-Central state, nominated to occupy the position and is apolitical.”
The nomination was endorsed by the National Council of State and confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, following the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 to October 2025.
