In a recent interview with media personality Edmund Obilo, Pa Bisi Akande shared intriguing details about President Bola Tinubu’s emergence as Nigeria’s leader.

Akande disclosed that Tinubu was initially hesitant to contest, citing financial constraints and personal doubts.

Contrary to popular opinion, Akande revealed that Tinubu’s lifelong ambition was not to rule the country. Instead, Akande played a significant role in convincing Tinubu to run.

The elder statesman recalled Tinubu’s response, saying, “Baba, do you have money? If I had the kind of money that people have to be president, I would rank with Dangote.”

Akande’s persuasion eventually won Tinubu over, with the elder statesman using a Yoruba proverb to drive his point home.

He told Tinubu, “We don’t want you to be president because of you. You are unimportant in this matter… Yoruba wants to be president, and you are the one we have now.”

Tinubu’s initial reluctance and Akande’s intervention shed new light on the events leading up to the 2023 election.

Akande also noted that Tinubu has grown as a political strategist, despite being “very ignorant about the politics of Nigeria” before his emergence as president.
