WATCH THE VIDEO HERE PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has expressed relief over the safe return of the Super Eagles after they were stranded in Libya, and is calling for justice regarding the treatment the team and its officials faced. The Super Eagles and their officials were held at a Libyan airport for over 13 hours ahead of their Group D Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights, scheduled for tomorrow. Following widespread outrage over the situation, which went viral early today, the team has now safely returned to Nigeria. President Tinubu is pleased that the players and officials are back home. “President Bola Tinubu, deeply disturbed by the inhumane treatment endured by the Super Eagles of Nigeria at a Libyan airport, is relieved to welcome their safe return to Nigeria,” said presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga this evening. The president expects the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to investigate the “traumatic experience” of the Super Eagles in Libya. “President Tinubu calls on the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to launch a thorough investigation and recommend suitable sanctions for those who deliberately violated CAF’s Statutes and Regulations,” the statement added. He commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development for their swift efforts in resolving the issue and ensuring the safe return of the team. President Tinubu also commended the players for maintaining their morale despite the “agonizing ordeal in Libya.” Although Libyan authorities have denied allegations of sabotaging the Super Eagles, CAF has announced that it is investigating the incident and will penalize anyone found culpable. “The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those who breached CAF Statutes and Regulations,” CAF said in a statement today.
