The Presidency has asked Nigerians to support the enforcement of President Bola Tinubu’s directive on the withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the call during a TV interview on Sunday.
Bwala urged citizens to document and report any cases of police escorts attached to those who are not eligible, adding that Nigerians should share “photographs or videos” of individuals still moving with police despite the executive order.
He, however, clarified that the recent directive does not apply to every serving government official.
“There are critical people in government who will still have one form of security or another,” he stated.
Bwala added that operatives of the State Security Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps may be deployed for such officials.
“It could be SSS, Civil Defence, and not the police who will be there to help you. But police have no business being with you,” he noted.
He said the directive is part of reforms to improve police efficiency and ensure more officers are deployed to public security duties.
Tinubu had earlier directed that police personnel attached to VIPs be withdrawn and reassigned to core policing roles.
