TOBI Amusan became the first Nigerian athlete to bag a medal at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletic Championship today, as she won silver in the women’s 100 metres hurdles.
The world record holder and 2022 world champion finished second in the final in 12.29 seconds, behind surprise winner Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland, who set a new Switzerland national record of
12.24s.
Grace Stark of the United States of America claimed bronze with 12.34s, while
Olympic champion Masai Russell, also of USA, was fourth in 12.44s.
Amusan, who has now won her first global medal since 2022, had stormed into the 100m hurdles final earlier on Monday.
The Nigerian star stunned the world in Eugene, Oregon, United States of America in 2022 by breaking the women’s 100m hurdles world record with her 12.12s run in the semi-finals before winning her country’s first-ever title in the competition in the final.
Amusan had qualified for the Tokyo 2025 final after an impressive semi-final performance earlier today, clocking 12.36s, which was faster than anybody going into the final.
She had finished ahead of Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.45s) and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s).
