WATCH THE VIDEO HERE The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) notorious for failed industrial actions, has called on workers to boycott the services of telecommunications giants MTN, Airtel, and Glo in response to a 50 per cent increase in tariffs. The announcement was made by the Central Working Committee of the labour union on Wednesday through a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, and secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja. The NLC also encouraged other concerned Nigerians to participate in the boycott, which will commence at 11:00 AM on Thursday. The statement emphasised, “The CWC demands an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, effective today, insisting that the companies revert to the previous rates until the committee completes its deliberations and reaches a definitive agreement. “As an initial step in resisting this unjust tariff increase, the CWC has instructed that starting Thursday, February 13, 2025, Nigerian workers and other willing citizens will boycott the services of MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February 2025.” The congress condemned the government for its failure to protect citizens from what it termed corporate exploitation. “If the tariff hike is not reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC will initiate a nationwide telecom shutdown beginning March 1, 2025. The Congress has called on civil society groups and all Nigerians to join the protest against exploitative economic policies,” it stated. MTN commenced implementation of the tariff increase just hours after the House of Representatives urged the federal government to suspend it.
