A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has killed Babangida, a notorious bandit’s sub-commander and one of the most trusted lieutenants of terror kingpin, Dogo Gide.
Reports emerging on Friday, November 21, revealed that the commander died on November 18 from injuries sustained during a targeted NAF bombardment on the outskirts of the Kurebe community, where several terrorists were neutralised.
A source, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, said Babangida’s death dealt a significant blow to the Gide faction, which has been responsible for multiple high-profile attacks across Niger State and neighbouring regions.
According to him, the group’s operational strength has been “substantially weakened.”
Intelligence reports suggest that recent kidnappings of schoolchildren in parts of Kebbi and Niger may have been retaliatory moves by fighters loyal to the slain commander.
The fighters were reportedly attempting to “demonstrate capacity” after sustaining heavy losses from sustained air and ground operations.
Community Leaders Visit Gide’s Mother
On November 19, community leaders from Kwaki, Buresidna, Chukuba, Buwidna, Kuchidna, Banda and Shalupe visited the residence of Dogo Gide’s mother in Palleli, where she was seen mourning her son’s closest aide.
A senior security source, who spoke anonymously, described Babangida’s elimination as “a major success that has rattled the camp,” but warned that the group may attempt further reprisals against civilians and security forces.
He said relevant security agencies have been placed on heightened alert to prevent additional attacks and protect vulnerable communities.
Residents have expressed relief, believing the death of the commander marks a turning point after years of violent raids.
A source at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters confirmed the strike and reiterated that offensive operations were continuing across affected states.
He said the focus remains on preventing retaliatory attacks and rescuing abducted victims as part of broader efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region.
