Tory Lanez is turning up the heat from behind bars as he fights to overturn his conviction in the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, claiming explosive new evidence was never shown to jurors.
The rapper, born Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence but says he remains hopeful the truth will come out. In his first televised interview from prison, Lanez told NBC News he believes his case was mishandled.
“I believe not only that I was wrongfully convicted, but the amount of new evidence that has emerged since that trial, I think, has been overwhelming,” he said.
Lanez was found guilty in 2022 after Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, testified that he shot her in the foot in July 2020 following a party hosted by Kylie Jenner in the Hollywood Hills. He has denied the accusation from the start.
Although a California appeals court recently rejected his initial appeal, Lanez’s attorneys say they are preparing a new one for the state’s Supreme Court. They allege prosecutors failed to turn over potentially favorable evidence, a violation known as the Brady rule.
Lanez is also asking Gov. Gavin Newsom for a pardon or clemency.
From the California Men’s Colony, he said, “I’m just asking for somebody in the system to look at my case and look at the evidence and ask if this was fair.”
During the trial, Megan testified she underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments, though those fragments were never shown to the jury.
