According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Mr. Adegoke confronted the students after catching them gambling inside a classroom. The confrontation reportedly turned violent as the enraged students descended on the teacher, beating him mercilessly and breaking his limbs in the process.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained from the assault.
The gruesome incident has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation among education stakeholders across Oyo State.
In a joint statement issued by a coalition of concerned educators, the group described the incident as “a horrifying act and an assault on the entire teaching profession.
“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a dedicated teacher who was brutally attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours,” the coalition said.
The educators urged the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted without delay. They also called for parents to be held accountable for their children’s conduct.
The coalition further lamented what it termed the growing “moral decay” among students, warning that schools across the country were becoming increasingly unsafe for teachers and other staff.
Meanwhile, the students involved in the fatal assault are said to be on the run as police have reportedly launched a manhunt to track them down.
