At least 87 people have tragically lost their lives after an overcrowded boat capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo yesterday on 3rd October 2024
The provincial government has also reported that 78 people are still missing as rescue operations continue.
Viral video footage shows the horrifying moment when the boat, packed with passengers, overturned while traveling from the town of Minova in South Kivu.
According to witnesses, the vessel, which was overloaded, was hit by a violent wave just 700 meters from the Kituku port in Goma, where it was attempting to dock.
Rescue efforts are underway, but many fear that the number of casualties may rise as authorities work to locate the missing passengers.
This tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of overcrowded vessels on the region’s waters.
