Trey Songz is taking legal action over his arrest at the 2021 AFC Championship game, claiming police failed to protect him and instead caused serious harm.
In a lawsuit filed Jan. 22, the singer, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, accused the Kansas City Police Department of negligence following an altercation in the stands at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium during the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
Songz was arrested at the time, jailed overnight, and later released without charges after prosecutors said there was not enough evidence.
According to the filing, Songz says he was being heckled and threatened by other fans and that officers, along with private security and the stadium’s sponsor, failed to step in.
“Instead of exercising their professional duty to intervene and protect plaintiff Tremaine A. Neverson, the defendants physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed and detained” him, the lawsuit states.
Songz is seeking unspecified damages, citing “serious, permanent and progressive injuries” to both his personal life and professional reputation.
A spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department declined to comment. Representatives for the other defendants have not responded publicly.
Songz has faced other legal issues in recent years, including arrests tied to physical altercations and civil lawsuits, which he has repeatedly denied or resolved outside of court.
