Troops of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Enduring Peace have foiled a planned attack on communities in Plateau State, killing five suspected bandits and recovering arms and ammunition.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the military said the operation was carried out in the early hours of January 1 during sustained offensive operations.
According to the statement, troops conducted an intelligence-led ambush after intercepting bandits who had mobilised from Dutsen Zaki toward the Odare Forest in Wase Local Government Area, allegedly with plans to attack neighbouring communities.
“During the firefight, troops neutralised five bandits, while others fled,” the statement said.
Items recovered from the suspects included two AK-47 rifle magazines containing 11 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition, two machetes and a knife.
The military added that troops are currently pursuing the fleeing bandits.
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of JTF Operation Enduring Peace, Major General EF Oyinlola, assured residents of Plateau State and other areas within the joint operations of the military’s continued commitment to protecting lives and property.
He urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations.
The military also warned criminal elements operating in the area to desist from illegal activities or face “decisive military action,” stressing that troops remain vigilant and ready to respond to threats against peace and stability in Plateau State.
