Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have successfully repelled a coordinated assault launched by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The terrorists targeted troops engaged in stabilisation operations in the area late Friday night but met stiff resistance, resulting in heavy losses for the insurgents.
In the course of the failed attack, the terrorists deployed two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) in an attempt to breach the Forward Operating Base (FOB). However, both vehicles were promptly detected and destroyed by alert troops.
Lt. Col. Sani Una, Spokesperson for the Theatre Command, confirmed in a statement that “no breach of the Forward Operating Base was recorded,” citing the effectiveness of the troops’ defensive fire systems.
CCTV footage and ground assessments revealed that several terrorists were killed during the confrontation, while others sustained serious injuries. Survivors were seen evacuating their dead and wounded from the battlefield.
In the early hours of Saturday, a combined force of Sector 3 OPHK/MNJTF troops, the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, Nigeria Police Crack Team, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) conducted an exploitation operation in the area.
...-assault sweep led to the recovery of multiple weapons and equipment abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
Items recovered included AK-47 rifles, ammunition magazines, belts of PKT rounds, hand grenades, motorcycles, communication devices, combat gear, medical supplies, and other sustainment materials.
Lt. Col. Una noted that the seizure would significantly degrade the operational capability of the terrorists and limit their ability to launch further attacks in the area.
Following the operation, troops have intensified aggressive fighting patrols across the general area to prevent further terrorist incursions and reassure local communities of ongoing military presence and protection.
