TUC Reacts To Sanwo-Olu’s Approval Of ₦85,000 Minimum Wage For Lagos Workers

The Lagos State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his approval of a new minimum wage of ₦85,000, calling it a clear demonstration of his dedication to improving the welfare of workers in the state.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, TUC Lagos Chairman, Gbenga Ekundayo, and Secretary, Aladetan Abiodun, applauded the governor for acknowledging the need to revise the current minimum wage to meet the demands of the state’s workforce.

The union expressed optimism about the upcoming negotiations and stressed the importance of maintaining fairness and mutual respect throughout the process.

Ekundayo and Abiodun reiterated the union’s commitment to working alongside the government to ensure that the final outcome is both beneficial to employees and sustainable for the state.

“While we have taken note of the ₦85,000 offer, we look forward to the upcoming meeting on Monday, Oct. 21, where we will commence discussions on this important matter.

“Organised Labour remains hopeful that through constructive dialogue, we can arrive at a more robust outcome that reflects both the economic realities of Lagos and the contributions of its workers.

“We are ready to work collaboratively with the government to ensure that the outcome is both beneficial to the workers and sustainable for the state.

“We remain committed to ensuring that this process upholds the highest standards of transparency and accountability.

“The welfare of workers is paramount, and we trust that our engagement with the government will result in an outcome that truly reflects the value of its workforce and the need to improve their living conditions,” the statement partly read.
