Two Nigerian military officers have reportedly fled the country after being named among those allegedly involved in a plot to overthrow the nation’s democratic government.
Security sources confirmed to The Cable that the two officers escaped shortly before authorities began a new round of arrests linked to the botched coup attempt, which has already seen at least 16 officers detained since the first week of October.
One of the fleeing officers was identified as Major J. M. Ganaks, with service number N/14363, a member of Regular Course 58 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He hails from the Federal Capital Territory and was stationed at Jaji, Kaduna State.
The second officer, Captain G. Binuga, with service number N/167722, is from Taraba State and was a member of Regular Course 64. His last posting was at the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Force (SOF) in Bida, Niger State.
Both officers were reportedly among 18 personnel initially marked for arrest, but they managed to evade capture and are now believed to have left the country.
Investigations by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), which is leading the probe, have reportedly yielded what sources described as “useful statements” from those already detained.
According to a top security source, the information extracted during interrogation has helped the authorities make additional arrests, bringing the total number of detained officers to over 30.
“Some of the arrested officers are keeping mum, but many have been very cooperative,” the source revealed.
The arrests form part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on alleged military personnel accused of plotting to topple President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
