Tyler Perry is seemingly taking credit for Ryan Coogler’s epic deal with Sinner’s after the Creed and Black Panther director was celebrated globally for landing a deal that gave him ownership rights to the movie.

The movie “Sinners” grossed a total of $365.9 million worldwide, including $278.6 million domestically and $87.3 million internationally. The film’s production budget was only $90 million.

“Everybody’s talking about the deal Ryan Coogler had for Sinners… I did that almost 20 years ago for Madea. I was letting him know how to talk in meetings, how to structure this deal — and to see him pull this off, I cried. I applaud this as a Black man — to get ownership,” Perry says in the clip below.

After the opening, Coogler shared a message about his inspiration for the deal.

“Making this film was inspired by my family and my ancestry, but at its core, it was always meant for audiences, in theaters. We made every decision with you in mind—feeling a deep responsibility to entertain, inspire, and move you in the way only cinema can,” he said at the time.

“I believe in cinema. I believe in the power of the theatrical experience—it’s a vital part of our society. That’s why my colleagues and I have devoted our lives to this craft. We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up.”
