Tyson Fury’s Retirement: ‘We Don’t Take It Too Seriously’ – Anthony Joshua’s Promoter Says

Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn said he and his client, Anthony Joshua, are not taking Tyson Fury’s retirement announcement from boxing “too seriously”.

Recall that Fury announced his retirement from boxing after his recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk, stating, “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It has been a blast, and I’ve loved every single minute of it.”

Before the announcement, the boxing community was excited about the prospect of a showdown between Joshua and Fury, especially given the recent challenges both fighters have encountered.

This high-stakes match had the potential to generate £150 million for both boxers, but now, the future of the much-anticipated bout is uncertain.

In light of Fury’s announcement, Hearn noted that he hasn’t been in contact with Joshua, implying that Joshua may currently be focused on his career and working to gain momentum after his recent defeat.

Addressing Fury’s announcement during an interview with iFL TV, Hearn remarked, “We don’t take it too seriously at this point. If Fury is serious about retiring, there’s not much we can do about it. It’s not really Joshua’s approach to jump into discussions right away.”

When asked about any updates from Joshua, Hearn replied, “Not one,” indicating that Joshua might be taking some time to reflect on the situation.

Hearn also suggested that Fury’s retirement could be a strategic move within negotiations, noting, “I wouldn’t question his sincerity, but it’s possible this announcement could lead to a more favourable deal for him, or perhaps he’s contemplating his future in the sport.”

Looking ahead, Hearn maintains a positive outlook, believing there is still a significant chance to see Joshua and Fury face off this summer. He emphasized that it’s hard to imagine Fury retiring without considering this landmark matchup.

Hearn ended on a supportive note, saying that if Fury finds himself no longer enjoying boxing, stepping back could ultimately be the right decision for him.
