Ugandan Youth Launch 40-Day Prayer Campaign to End Museveni’s Rule

A group of young Ugandan activists has announced the launch of a 40-day national prayer campaign dubbed “Bye-bye Museveni,” calling for divine intervention to end President Yoweri Museveni’s 40-year rule.

Set to begin on June 1, 2025, the campaign will be conducted across the country, with participants gathering in churches, homes, and open spaces to pray for what they call a “new dawn of justice, peace, and political transformation.”

The activists say they have turned to prayer after years of widespread corruption, electoral fraud, police brutality, and human rights violations under Museveni’s administration.

“We believe that Uganda’s liberation will not come through violence or foreign intervention but through the power of prayer,” said one of the organizers during a press briefing in Kampala.

They argue that the government’s repressive tactics and impunity have left citizens with little recourse but to seek spiritual help.

President Museveni, 79, has been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. While his government maintains that it has brought stability and development to Uganda, critics accuse him of manipulating electoral processes, crushing dissent, and entrenching a culture of fear and control.

The organizers have invited all Ugandans regardless of religion or political affiliation to join the campaign, saying that the goal is to “reclaim Uganda through faith, not force.”

The campaign is expected to draw attention both locally and internationally as the country continues to grapple with issues of democracy, governance, and accountability.
