UK rapper Ghetts appeared in court yesterday after being officially charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
As previously reported by MTO News, Ghetts, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, was driving in the Ilford, Essex, area when he failed to stop after hitting a 20-year-old man in Ilford on Saturday, October 18.
The victim has since been identified as 20-year-old Nepali student Yubin Tamang.
Surveillance footage of the incident has been circulating online and shows the victim walking in the middle of the street, which was relatively quiet until Ghett’s BMW comes speeding up the street and hits Tamang, the impact sending him between 60-70 feet in the air, according to reports.
The rapper did not stop after hitting the victim.
Ghetts’ vehicle and license plate number were given to the police by a bystander, who went to his home. While they found his BMW keys inside his house, the vehicle was not outside his home. They searched the area and found that the rapper had parked his truck further away from his residence to evade capture.
Ghetts, who starred in the Netflix show, Supacell, appeared at the Barkingside Magistrates’ Court donning a grey prison-issue tracksuit, flanked by two correctional officers. He confirmed his name, date of birth, and address, and was immediately remanded in custody.
He is scheduled to appear before the Old Bailey on November 24.
