UN pledges stronger support for Nigeria’s displaced persons

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, outlined ongoing efforts to support communities affected by insecurity and displacement in the northern region.

Fall emphasized key priorities, including food security, social protection, education, and environmental sustainability—critical components of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030.

These include Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Quality Education (SDG 4), Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Climate Action (SDG 13), and No Poverty (SDG 1).

Acknowledging the impact of economic downturns and global crises, he noted that the UN is working closely with the Nigerian government to align strategies with national development plans.

One of the critical concerns remains the effective distribution of humanitarian aid. While recognizing past challenges, Fall assured that mechanisms have been strengthened.

“We have worked to ensure that aid reaches those who need it the most, and not just as a temporary relief but as part of a long-term solution,” he stated.

He also stressed the importance of transitioning from short-term relief to sustainable empowerment programs.

“It’s not just about providing food when lives are threatened; it’s about giving people the ability to produce food and earn a living,” the UN coordinator said.
Beyond emergency response, the UN reiterates its commitment to supporting education, healthcare, and economic resilience initiatives to help displaced persons rebuild their lives with dignity.

As Nigeria navigates its development path, Fall affirmed that the UN will continue to drive inclusive growth, mitigate humanitarian crises, and accelerate progress toward the 2030 SDGs.

Addressing concerns over pollution and environmental justice in the Niger Delta, Fall expressed optimism that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) might extend similar cleanup and restoration support beyond Ogoniland to other polluted areas in the region.
