The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, in a statement released today, confirmed the shutdown but clarified that it does not apply to non-academic staff. The university has instructed students to vacate their hostels immediately. The statement explained that the indefinite shutdown was prompted by the refusal of University of Benin students to compromise on their demand for round-the-clock electricity supply and more, a request deemed unfeasible by the University’s Senate. The protesting students, who had blocked the Benin-Ore Highway, having faced weeks of prolong power outages on campus, which severely impacted their preparations for the imminent first-semester exams, only two weeks away. The management has labelled the students’ plea for continuous electricity supply as impractical. Staff members not involved in teaching activities and those on essential duties are unaffected by the shutdown.
