Uromi Killing: ‘You Can’t Carry Weapons And Hunt In The South Anymore’ — Kano Lawmaker Warns Constituents

The House of Representatives member for Rano Bunkure Federal Constituency in Kano State, Alhassan Rurum, has urged his constituents—particularly hunters—to refrain from venturing to Southern Nigeria for hunting, citing heightened insecurity and recent tragic events in Edo State.

Naijaonpoint reports that the appeal came during a condolence visit on Thursday to the bereaved families in Bunkure Village, who lost loved ones in the recent violence that erupted in Uromi, Edo State.

Addressing the gathering, Rurum emphasised that the nation’s security landscape has shifted drastically, making certain activities, such as cross-regional hunting, both risky and inappropriate.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on our brothers, especially the hunters, things have changed today, and they are not like before,” he said.

“In this age, you cannot carry weapons like guns and cutlasses and go to the South in the name of hunting. Things have changed.”

He continued by urging his people to align their lifestyles with the evolving national context, stressing how such practices can be misinterpreted in unfamiliar communities.

“Our people need to stop these practices and reason with the current situation at hand. Things have really degenerated,” he said.

“It’s like you living in this community, to see some Southern tribe wielding dangerous weapons coming around, they don’t speak your language and you don’t speak theirs. What would be your reaction?

“In like manner, you can’t be wielding dangerous weapons in southern communities where you don’t speak their language and they don’t speak yours in the name of hunting.”

Rurum reiterated the urgency of adapting to new realities: “Things have changed in this country, it’s not like it used to be. So we are hereby calling on them, to stop this practice.”

He also revealed plans to engage local hunting associations in Kano to help end this cross-regional activity.

“We are going to meet with the various hunters associations in the state to ensure that these practices are stopped.

“We should learn to adapt to changes as they come. This hunting practice must not continue. You go out in the name of hunting and come back without even a rat.

“We call on you people to please stop this practice and ensure that you desist from it. Sit down and reason and bring out a more friendly practice,” he added.
