U.S. Congressman Riley Moore has accused the Nigerian government of complicity in widespread attacks against Christians, labeling its response as a “shameful silence” amid escalating killings and church destructions.
Speaking on Monday with podcast host Mario Nawfal, Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd District, claimed incontrovertible evidence of a genocide targeting Nigerian Christians, with the government ignoring the violence’s alarming scale
.“The government in Nigeria is complicit in the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Moore stated. He cited estimates of 50,000 to 100,000 murdered Christians and blamed three groups—Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and Fulani herdsmen—for the atrocities.
While acknowledging limited progress against Boko Haram, Moore criticised the Bola Tinubu administration for failing to protect vulnerable communities despite U.S. security aid.
Moore decried global indifference to the crisis, urging U.S. intervention. “My Christian brothers and sisters are being murdered in Nigeria, and this is me raising the alarm in the United States. We have to do something,” he said, adding that the government’s inaction emboldens perpetrators.
He called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to designate Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” under the proposed Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2025 for enabling severe religious freedom violations.
The accusations align with efforts by Republican lawmakers pressing the Trump administration for stronger diplomatic action. The Nigerian government rejects genocide claims, insisting it promotes unity and protects all religious groups.
