Samsung‘s May security update has finally landed on the US versions of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. The latest security patch is also rolling out to the Galaxy S21 FE in the US. The company has already updated all eligible flagship devices, including foldables and tablets.

Galaxy S22 & S21 FE grab the May update in the US

Samsung was relatively slow to roll out the May 2024 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) to Galaxy devices by its own standard. While the company released the patch for the Galaxy S24 series on the first day of the month, it took another two weeks to expand the coverage to other models. In between, it pushed the One UI 6.1 update to eligible models.

The Galaxy S22 series was the first to grab the latest SMR after the Galaxy S24. Samsung initially released the update in Europe. It has since pushed the new security patch to various other devices globally. Finally, the update has reached the US versions of the 2022 flagships. It is available for carrier-locked and unlocked units with the firmware build numbers S90*USQS5EXE2 and S90*U1UES5EXE2, respectively.

This update is also rolling out to the Galaxy S21 FE. The device recently joined the party but has picked up the new SMR globally. In the US, the update comes with the build number G990USQSBGXE1 or G990USQSBGXE2 for carrier-locked units. For unlocked units, it is G990U1UESBGXE1. International versions are getting the build number G990BXXU8GXE1, G990B2XXU7GXE1, or G990WVLSBGXE1 depending on the market.

Regardless of the firmware version, the latest updates for the Galaxy S22 trio and the Galaxy S21 FE have an identical changelog. Samsung is only pushing this month’s security fixes to the devices. The May SMR contains 55 vulnerability patches, including three critical Android OS fixes. If you are using any of these devices in the US or anywhere else, the latest security patch may reach you anytime now if it hasn’t already.

These devices will get two more Android updates

Samsung launched the Galaxy S21 FE and the Galaxy S22 series a month apart in early 2022. The devices ran Android 12 out of the box. They have since received updates to Android 13 and Android 14. The company promises to push two more Android OS updates to the devices, i.e., Android 15 and Android 16. Security updates will come at least until January or February 2027, so the phones still have plenty of life left.
