Renowned Nigerian Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has criticised the United States President, Donald Trump, accusing him of engaging in what he described as reckless gangsterism during his second term in office, following a series of military actions allegedly carried out without the approval of the United States Congress.
Falana, in a Vanguard publication, alleged that Trump’s conduct not only violates the US Constitution but also undermines international law and the global order.
Falana observed that, a few months ago, Trump authorised the bombing of Iran without seeking or obtaining congressional approval, a move described as unconstitutional and dangerous.
He argued that the action marked the beginning of a pattern in which the US President increasingly bypassed both domestic and international legal frameworks in pursuing foreign military interventions.
Threats Against Nigeria, Airstrikes In North-West
The renowned lawyer also recalled Trump’s alleged threats against Nigeria in November last year, when he reportedly vowed to attack the country “gun-a-blazing” over what he described as a Christian genocide.
Naijaonpoint reports that on December 25, 2025, Trump further escalated tensions when he announced that the United States had launched what he termed “powerful and deadly” airstrikes against militants linked to the Islamic State group in north-western Nigeria.
Once again, critics noted, the action was taken without congressional approval.
Venezuela Invasion
The condemnation intensified on Wednesday night following Trump’s alleged bombing of Caracas, Venezuela, which reportedly led to the overthrow of President Nicolás Maduro and the death of scores of unarmed civilians.
After the invasion, Trump announced that US forces had captured a foreign head of state and his wife, subsequently charging them in a District Court in the United States on allegations of terrorism and narcotics trafficking.
Beyond the military action, Falana accused Trump of attempting to impose a transition regime in Venezuela, allegedly designed to facilitate the seizure of the country’s vast oil and gas resources.
He described the move as an attempt to turn Venezuela into a “new colony of the United States”, arguing that it represents a blatant assault on the sovereignty of an independent nation.
Call For US Congress, Judiciary To Act
Despite ideological disagreements with the Maduro administration, Falana urged the United States Congress to rise above partisan interests and sanction President Trump for what they termed the illegal invasion of Venezuela.
He also called on the US judiciary to resist what they described as a “dubious attempt” to use domestic courts to undermine the sovereign rights of the Venezuelan people.
Falana further described the alleged abduction and extraordinary rendition of a sitting president of a sovereign state as a “blatant violation of international law”, warning that such actions set a dangerous precedent globally.
According to him, the silence and inaction of the so-called international community expose deep hypocrisy and double standards in the enforcement of global norms.
Falana concluded by calling on the United Nations to take a firm stand in defence of Venezuela, insisting that the global body must demand justice and accountability if it hopes to preserve its credibility.
He warned that failure to act decisively would amount to a betrayal of the letter and spirit of the United Nations Charter, and further weaken international law in an increasingly unstable world.
