Doctors at Devnandani Hospital in Hapur, India, were left in shock after successfully removing a staggering 50 objects from the stomach of a 40-year-old man who was rushed in with severe abdominal pain earlier this month.

Scans revealed dozens of metallic and plastic objects lodged in his abdomen, including 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens.

Naijaonpoint understands that the delicate five-hour operation, led by Dr Shyam Kumar, took place on September 17.

Medical staff described the procedure as one of the most unusual they had ever encountered.

“When we performed the ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan, we were stunned to see metallic and plastic objects inside his stomach. I have never seen so many foreign bodies in one patient,” Times of Indian quoted Dr Kumar as saying.

Hospital officials disclosed that the man had a history of substance abuse and had been admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad about a month before the incident.

Reports suggested that he grew angry over being kept at the centre and began swallowing everyday household items in protest.

Speaking to reporters, the patient admitted, “I would pick them up and go to the washroom to swallow them.”

During surgery, doctors discovered that the spoon heads and toothbrush bristles had been broken off before ingestion.

“There were about 28 spoon parts, along with 21 headless brush parts and two pens,” Kumar explained.

Medical experts have since suggested that the bizarre behaviour could be linked to pica disorder, a psychiatric condition that compels individuals to consume non-food items.

While the man is now recovering, doctors say he will require ongoing psychiatric evaluation to prevent recurrence.
