Vigilante group kills senior police officer in Taraba

A vigilante group has killed a senior police officer in an ambush in Taraba State.

The incident, according to the state’s Commissioner of Police, David Iloyanomon, occurred on May 4, at Sandirde Village, Gassol Council of the state.

The CP, who disclosed the incident in statement, yesterday, identified the victim as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tapu Godfrey.

The victim, he said, was member of a special strike force unit conducting a routine patrol when a vigilante group, led by Ali Dissol, ambushed them.

He said: “The group opened fire, striking ASP Godfrey in the lap. Despite being rushed to the General Hospital in Sandirde for treatment, he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.”

Describing the attacks as “despicable and unwarranted” the commissioner said the command has launched a full-scale manhunt for the suspects, stating that “we have deployed intelligence and operational resources to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

While expressing condolences to the family and friends of ASP Godfrey, Iloyanomon assured that law enforcement ould take every measure to ensure safety and bring justice to those involved in the heinous crime.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to combating crime and maintaining public safety, urging residents to remain calm and report any information that can assist in the investigation.
