THE West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports suggesting that it has imposed restrictions on the subjects Senior Secondary School students can register for in the upcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement released today by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, on behalf of the Head of National Office, the Council dismissed the reports as “baseless and misleading.”
WAEC urged schools, students, and the general public to disregard such claims circulating on social media.
The Council clarified that it has not issued any directive limiting students’ subject combinations, emphasizing that it has no authority over the development or modification of secondary school curricula. That responsibility, it stated, lies solely with the Federal Government through the relevant education authorities.
“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” the statement read.
“The Council did not issue any such directive nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subjects for WASSCE (SC) 2026.”
The examination body further explained that its role is strictly to conduct examinations based on government-approved curricula, operating within established national education policies and legal frameworks.
“The development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria is within the purview of the Federal Government. WAEC, as an examination body, only implements government policies through assessments,” the statement added.
WAEC reassured all stakeholders that any curriculum changes would follow due process and not be introduced arbitrarily.
Established in 1952, WAEC conducts examinations across five West African nations—Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia—and is widely recognized for its commitment to fairness, integrity, and academic excellence.
The Council advised schools and the public to rely solely on official communications from WAEC for accurate information regarding the 2026 WASSCE and reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and equal opportunities for all candidates.
