The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports claiming that it directed senior secondary school students to take specific subjects in the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
The Council made its position known in a statement issued by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, who described the circulating information as false and misleading.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina said.
WAEC clarified that it does not have the power to design or alter curricula for Nigerian schools, stressing that such responsibility rests with the Federal Government.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” Adeshina explained.
The examination body noted that its role is strictly to implement government-approved policies through credible assessments.
Reassuring students and parents, WAEC emphasised its commitment to fairness and professionalism in the conduct of the 2026 WASSCE.
“All candidates taking part in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given a fair and equal opportunity in the assessment process,” the statement read.
The Council also urged schools, parents, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports and rely only on official communications from WAEC regarding examination guidelines.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” Adeshina added.
