Paul Onuachu marked his permanent return to Trabzonspor with a decisive strike as the Black Sea Storm edged past newly-promoted Kocaelispor 1-0 in their Turkish Super Lig curtain-raiser on Monday night, Footynaija.com reports.
The Nigerian forward, who scored 17 goals during a prolific loan spell from Southampton in 2023-24, was finally secured on a full-time deal this summer after months of failed negotiations last season.
Cleared to play following a minor injury setback, Onuachu started alongside fellow Nigerians Anthony Nwakaeme and Kazeem Olaigbe at Papara Park.
Trabzonspor, roared on by their home crowd, dominated possession and pressed aggressively, forcing Kocaelispor into a defensive shell. The visitors, making their top-flight return after years away, battled gamely but struggled to cope with the hosts’ height and power at set pieces.

The breakthrough came just after the interval when Mustafa Eskihellac swung in a teasing delivery that Onuachu met with a glancing header, steering the ball beyond the stranded goalkeeper. It was a trademark finish from the 6ft 7in striker, whose aerial ability remains one of his most lethal weapons.
Olaigbe’s shift ended after 63 minutes, while Onuachu exited to warm applause in the 77th minute. Nwakaeme, operating in an advanced midfield role, impressed with his vision before making way six minutes from time.
With a blend of experience, physical presence, and youthful flair, Trabzonspor’s Nigerian trio could prove pivotal in their push for silverware this season. The team’s next challenge is an away clash against Kasimpasa on Monday, 18 August.
