WATCH THE VIDEO HERE FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has recommended that African nations reassess the Western-style democracy they have adopted. He emphasized the need for Africa to develop a democratic model that aligns with its heritage and prioritizes the well-being of its people. Obasanjo stated this during a summit on the State of Democracy in Africa held at the Yar’adua Centre in Abuja today. As a keynote speaker at the summit, the former Nigerian President called for a democracy that is inclusive of all citizens and highlighted the importance of African leaders demonstrating a steadfast commitment to the welfare of their people. According to Obasanjo, effective democracy in Nigeria and Africa at large should be founded on principles of good governance, strong institutions, and the rule of law. He defined democracy as a system of government shaped by the consent of the people, characterized by a legitimate mandate free from corruption, and aimed at improving the livelihoods of the general populace. The summit, organized by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation, was sponsored by the Ford Foundation and Trust Africa. Its focus is to examine the progress made, challenges faced, and potential threats to democracy in Africa.
