We must speak truth to power to sustain Nigeria’s democracy, ex-governor Ihedioha tells leaders

A former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha has said that leaders must continue to speak truth to power in order to sustain and protect Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking on Monday, March 24, during his birthday celebration, Ihedioha said the subject of discuss at his event in Abuja was Nigeria’s democracy and how to protect the institution.

He said democracy remains the best form of governance for Nigeria and that he is committed to doing everything necessary to sustain it.

His words, “I have lived my life pursing the cause of democracy and so when I take certain positions, it should be understood. I do not take positions because I like you or I do not like you but because I believe that democracy remains the best form of governance for our land.

“And because I know I do not know any other business than pursuing this cause, it makes sense for me to do everything to sustain it,” the former governor said.

Ihedioha further urged all Nigerians and leaders alike to rise and protect the institution of democracy.

He added, “For me I have been in the legislature for 12 years, I have passed through that institution so I remain committed to that institution.

“I’ve had the privilege of serving in the executive as a staff and later as an elected governor, so I will always protect that institution and I think that judiciary is very fundamental in out stability.

“So I urge all me and women of good will, that we do everything we can without fear or favour and speaking truth to power to sustain and protect this institution. To protect democracy,” he said.
