Four-time German Bundesliga Champions Werder Bremen are set to take key measures to help Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface return to peak physical condition, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old forward joined Die Grün-Weißen on the transfer deadline deal in a season-long loan deal from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Boniface was initially set to join AC Milan, subject to a medical check. Upon further enquiry, the seven-time UEFA Champions League winners opted against bringing the Nigerian to the San Siro, as there were issues with his knee.

While he revealed there’s nothing medically wrong with him in his first press conference as a Werder player, the former Bodo/Glimt forward is yet to hit the heights he’s known for.

In four appearances for Horst Steffen’s side, Boniface is yet to score, although he set up a goal in Werder’s 4-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

It now appears that the 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the Season has put on extra weight.

In Werder’s 1-0 win just before the International break, Boniface had a late chance to score his first goal against St. Pauli, but he missed his shot, a chance he’d normally bury with vim.

Werder Bremen boss states club plans to help Boniface

When Boniface returned to Leverkusen after he failed a Milan medical, the club’s Sporting Director, Simon Rolfes, revealed there were special plans in place to get him back to physical condition. A week later, the striker joined Werder.

Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, has now revealed they plan to follow the same course of action to get the best from the one-time German Champion.

“We have clearly identified the topics together with Victor and accompany him from all sides,” the 44-year-old said in quotes revealed by BILD.

“This concerns athletic training, physiotherapy and also the topic of nutrition with appropriate advice.

“We are close to him. He accepts our company, wants to work on himself.

“He works on the lawn without a doubt. There, Boniface shows more discipline than at the dining table.

“Victor also completes extra shifts, works up and trains on a day off on the weekend,” the ex-Werder defender concluded.

While he’s had his fight with fitness, the comments from the Werder Manager shine a good light on Boniface, revealing he’s putting in the work to get back to his best.
