The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has denied reports that female inmates are being left without menstrual care.
Naijaonpoint reports that in a statement signed by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, DSC Adamu Samson Duza, the command described the reports as false and misleading, insisting they do not reflect conditions within the facilities.
According to the service, all female inmates receive sanitary pads and hygiene kits at no cost, with distribution recorded monthly in welfare registers.
Medical units within the custodial centres, staffed with trained nurses and doctors, provide healthcare support for female inmates, including menstrual-related care.
Inmates are offered free consultations, medications, and referrals to nearby hospitals when necessary.
The service said it also works with civil society groups, faith-based organizations, and development partners to improve menstrual hygiene.
According to NCoS, recently, the Nigerian Medical Association donated sanitary products to support the wellbeing of female inmates.
These partnerships are part of ongoing efforts to maintain hygiene and dignity in custody.
The NCoS FCT Command reaffirmed its commitment to treating inmates with dignity and ensuring their rights, following both Nigerian law and international standards, including the Nelson Mandela Rules and United Nations guidelines for prisoner treatment.
The command urged journalists to verify their sources before reporting on the service to avoid spreading misinformation.
