Getafe had only 14 first-team players available for their LaLiga opener at Celta Vigo, but Christantus Uche delivered the goods for them despite the tough circumstances…
Getafe coach Jose Bordalas has praised Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche, following his performance in their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Los Azulones had to overcome a terrible build-up to their opening LaLiga game of the season on Sunday. Only 14 of their senior players were eligible to play the game due to the league’s stringent financial rules.
In fact, they only managed to register the 14 players after selling Omar Alderete to Sunderland last week.
Going into the game, Celta Vigo were clearly the favourites. However, coach Bordalas stunned their hosts.
After a goalless first half, the game picked up in the second half, with Uche supplying the assist for Adrian Liso’s first in the 47th minute.

Then, 25 minutes later, he doubled Getafe’s lead. with a fine finish from inside the box after riding the challenges from two Celta Vigo defender. His effort was just enough to help Getafe to a 2-0 win.
It wasn’t a surprise that the Super Eagles star won the Man of the match award eventually.
Also, according to Opta, Uche became the first player to score and assist for Getafe in a LaLiga opener since Riki did it in 2005.
1+1 – Christantus Uche is the first Getafe player to both score and assist in a LaLiga game since Christantus Uche himself against Real Sociedad in January 2025, and the second to achieve this feat with the club on MD 1 of the competition, after Riki vs Espanyol in 2005. Everything Jose Bordala said about Christantus Uche
Getafe coach Jose Bordalas was very impressed with Christantus Uche’s performance, but he noted that he was not surprised, as the Super Eagles star has a lot of quality.

“He’s our player. We have complete confidence in him and all his teammates, the team in general,” Bordalas said after the Celta Vigo game, per Marca.
“For Uche to shine, his teammates have had to put in a huge effort. It doesn’t surprise us because he already did it last season. Uche is a Getafe player and we have confidence that he’ll be with us.”
Next up for Getafe is a tough fixture against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next Monday. Uche will be expected to deliver the good once again for Los Azulones.
However, with the club still struggling to register players due to LaLiga’s tight financial rules, they might be tempted to sell him if a good offer comes this summer.
