A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has dismissed the 10-day ultimatum issued by former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, calling for the dissolution of the party’s leadership.
Naijaonpoint recalls that Lamido had demanded that the PDP resolve its deepening internal crisis, including the nullification of the national convention held in Ibadan and the decisions reached there.
However, Sani, the Special Assistant to the National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, in an interview with the BBC, urged Lamido to put aside grievances and work with the current leadership.
According to him, it was unbecoming of Lamido, regarded as an elder statesman and key contributor to the party’s growth, to now be the one demanding its disintegration.
Sani emphasised that the demands of Lamido and his close allies are impossible, and that there is no going back on the party’s position.
He said, “Right now, what our party, the PDP, needs is unity. All forms of disputes should be set aside so we can move forward.
“What Sule Lamido and others want the party to do is impossible. Everything that needed to be done has already been done, so there is no going back.”
Sani added that the National Chairman had previously attempted to meet with Sule Lamido to resolve the misunderstanding, “but it didn’t work out, so there is nothing else to discuss.”
Meanwhile, the PDP Chairman in Jigawa State and a loyalist of Lamido, Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, while speaking with BBC maintained that there were clear violations of party regulations in the emergence of the new leadership.
He said, “The tenure of the Damagum-led PDP executives has not expired, and they have not resigned. So how can others suddenly declare themselves leaders? Where has such ever been done? According to party rules, their tenure ends on December 8, 2025. Until then, the PDP has no vacancy in leadership.”
