Sevilla head coach Matias Almeyda has weighed in on Akor Adams‘ profligacy in front of goal this season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 25-year-old joined the Spanish side from Montpellier in January for €5.5m, but his first six months were riddled with injuries.

After a summer of hard work, the ex-Sogndal striker looked primed for a fresh start this season. He scored against Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona before finding the back of the net against Lesotho on his Super Eagles debut.

Adams’ last club game was in the first week of October. Since then, he’s found himself on the bad side of Sevilla fans, and his poor record of being constantly caught offside hasn’t helped his cause.

Almeyda backs Akor Adams to regain form

The Nigerian forward is currently on a run of eight club games without a goal. He departs for the AFCON 2025 soon, and his club coach backed him to get back on track following the 1-1 draw against Valencia.

“He is a footballer who works a lot and needs confidence. I prefer that he is trying to right his wrongs rather than standing still,” the Argentine said in quotes revealed by Orgullobiri.

Sevilla fans have demanded more calm and precision in the coordination of their attacks, and Adams himself vowed to do better.

“I know I fall a lot offside. I’m working to correct it and help the team more.”

Sevilla have lost eight of their 15 league games this term, but the 93rd-minute goal conceded against Valencia left a big dent in their morale.

“It is a shame because we were so close to winning, but the performance we put in was positive. This is something we can take from the game.

“The commitment and concentration we showed, and the pressing were things we had worked on during the week, and today they did very well,” Almeyda concluded.

Sevilla are currently 13th on the La Liga table, and will be without Akor Adams till the end of January if Nigeria get to the latter end of the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.
