The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is using him to destroy the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recalling instead how the past government of late President, Muhammadu Buhari, allegedly attempted to wreck the opposition party.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Thursday, Wike said it was under Buhari’s administration that the PDP came under its worst external threat.
“Let me just tell you this. When Buhari was in power, there was nothing the government did not do for PDP to scatter, there was nothing,” Wike stated.
The FCT minister alleged that former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, was deployed at the time to destabilise the PDP.
Wike said, “In fact, Ali Modu Sheriff was being used to scatter PDP then. We stood firm and made sure the party was strong. You can see clearly.”
The former governor of Rivers State insisted that the current administration has made no attempt to weaken the party.
“Now, there is not even any attempt by any government to try to put the party down. You are the one on your own destroying your party,” he declared.
Recounting his personal experience, Wike said he was subjected to intimidation during his tenure as Rivers State governor but refused to bow to pressure.
“We were governors, who is pursuing whom? I had a major threat as a governor. That alone would have made me to say, let me go and enjoy to save my head,” he revealed.
