Canada has rejected the asylum request of Wale Akinpelu, a retired Nigerian police officer, and his wife, Ajarat Mojirola, citing Akinpelu’s past involvement in corruption and human rights abuses while serving in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Peoples Gazette reports that the couple fled Nigeria in 2017, claiming threats from a criminal gang, and later sought refugee protection in Canada in 2018. However, Canadian immigration authorities swiftly suspended their applications, focusing on Wale Akinpelu ’s past actions and inconsistencies in their claims and evidence.

The couple’s applications were processed separately, with Akinpelu’s request denied immediately due to his association with human rights violations. Ajarat’s asylum request also faced rejection after Canadian officials found numerous contradictions in her testimony and evidence, including false documents provided by her husband.

After a series of failed appeals, the court upheld the rejection and initiated deportation proceedings for Ajarat.
