The running mate of Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed that he attended the National Executive Council meeting of the Julius Abure faction of the party on Monday as a peacemaker.

Naijaonpoint recalls Baba-Ahmed sparked reactions from political watchers following his decision to attend the Abure-led meeting amidst the internal wranglings rocking Labour Party, which has divided the party into two factions.

As previously reported, key figures, including the factional National Chairman, Julius Abure; National Secretary, Umar Farouk; National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh; and National Youth Leader, Ken Ahanotu, attended the meeting.

Speaking at the NEC meeting, Baba-Ahmed disclosed that he attended to see ways of reconciling the factions and restoring the unity in the Labour Party.

“I am here as a peacemaker and I am also here to reconcile divergent opinions,” the party’s former VP candidate said.

I Remain In Labour Party

The politician also acknowledged attending meetings of the opposition coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections, but stated that their discussions didn’t align with his position and he remains a Labour Party member.

“I am very proud to say that I did attend meetings of certain attempts of a coalition in Nigeria. Morally speaking, if your neighbourhood invites you to discuss security, you must attend.

“However, if you attend and they discuss other matters outside that, you are at liberty to restore yourself to your former position. I have attended and I have listened to the coalition attempts. Yes, I still remain in the Labour Party,” Baba-Ahmed said.
