Why I resigned as Speaker of Lagos Assembly – Meranda

Hon. Mojisola Meranda on Monday said she resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, because of the need to preserve the integrity of the legislature and prevent further crisis within the House.

Addressing lawmakers during the plenary session in Alausa, Ikeja, Meranda described her decision as a “personal sacrifice” aimed at resolving the lingering leadership crisis in the Assembly.

“I have made a personal sacrifice towards resolving the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she stated, adding that her family’s legacy in promoting democracy, good governance, and service remained her guiding principle.

Meranda, who was sworn in as Speaker on January 13, 2025, revealed that her resignation was carefully considered, as the ongoing crisis threatened the stability of the legislative institution.

“It is with heavy responsibility that I wish to resign my position as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly with effect from this day, March 3, 2025. I took this decision carefully and with firm consideration. On one hand, I accepted the position of Speaker, and on the other hand, I resigned because it is threatening the democracy of this House.”

While acknowledging the mandate of the Assembly to serve the people of Lagos State, she expressed her belief that her resignation was an act of leadership and selflessness.

“I feel that I have demonstrated leadership and selfless sacrifice by resigning in order to protect these resources that we have suffered to build.”

She extended gratitude to her colleagues, the management and staff of the House of Assembly, for their unwavering support throughout her short tenure, describing the moment as memorable despite its brevity.

“Thank you for finding me worthy to lead this distinguished and honourable Assembly. I am not a quitter; however, I took this bold decision in order to save this legislative institution from further unnecessary conflict and embarrassment.”

While stepping down from the role, Meranda reaffirmed her commitment to serving her constituency, Apapa Constituency 1, and the people of Lagos State. She urged her fellow lawmakers to remain focused on justice and fairness.

“Occasionally, we are confronted by overwhelming challenges and conflicts, but as responsible leaders, we must not break down the legislative House that we collectively built in pursuit of justice and fairness.”

Expressing appreciation for the support and solidarity she received through calls, messages, and visits, Meranda acknowledged the supremacy of party decisions in the political landscape.

“At this point, I take a bow as your Speaker and step down for this great House,” she concluded.

Her resignation paves the way for a new leadership structure in the 10th Lagos Assembly, following weeks of speculation about internal divisions within the House.
