Nigerian singer Waje has explained why she stopped communicating with the father of her daughter.
Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Waje revealed that after the man initially rejected the pregnancy, he later reached out, apologized, and asked to be part of their daughter’s life.
Naijaonpoint reports that she said she was not against the idea but wanted him to take full responsibility by filing for his child since he is a Canadian citizen.
The songstress explained that they both agreed to conduct a DNA test, but he delayed the process and eventually cut off contact.
By 2015, she said she stopped hearing from him completely.
The singer explained that her decision to stop communication was to protect her daughter’s emotional stability, stressing that sometimes single parents restrict access to the other parent when they sense it could disrupt the child’s peace.
She said: “I was 16 when I got pregnant and I didn’t tell my mum till I was about five months gone.”
“When we went to tell the father’s family, he denied it. He said, ‘It’s not him, it’s not him,’ so it became his word against mine.
“Years later, he came back and said, ‘I was young. I wasn’t quite mature then. But now I would love to meet my daughter. I’m sorry, Vivian, but this child needs to know who her dad is.’
“I said no. It wasn’t because I was bitter. At that time, I was even in a very good relationship. The truth is, sometimes when a single parent, especially a mother, refuses access to the other parent, it’s not always because of bitterness. It’s because that person can destabilize the child.
“Later, I told him, ‘You are a citizen in Canada, so file for your child.’ My daughter wasn’t even interested in citizenship at that time.
“We agreed that he would do a DNA test. He delayed it, and I never heard from him again. The last time we spoke was around 2015.”
