A Nigerian lawyer, Barrister Edidiong Offiong, has raised concerns over the growing rate of domestic abuse against men in marriages.
She noted that while abuse against women is widely publicized, men suffer in silence, often out of fear of judgment or societal labels.
According to her, many men choose to remain quiet due to ego or fear of being perceived as weak.
Offiong revealed that from professional experience, some women who publicly cry out are, in fact, the actual abusers.
She emphasized that men also go through emotional and physical abuse in their marriages but rarely speak up.
The lawyer stated that if men were given a safe space to express their experiences, many would be shocked at what they endure.
She stressed that both genders deserve peace and good treatment in their homes, regardless of societal expectations.
Offiong called for fairness and balance, warning against the assumption that only women are victims.
She also pointed out that some women physically harm their partners, leaving them bruised and in pain.
The lawyer urged society to stop ignoring the suffering of men and to recognize abuse in all forms.
She wrote, “I’m telling you this for free, men sûffers domestic ab’us€ more than vvomen, but, vvomèn’s own are more popular and the society tends to project vvomen’s own because they are perceived to be weak.
By the time men start speaking up, y’all will gather and give me my flowers.From work experience, most women that speak out and cry out are the abusers.We know how to extract the truth.
“Men tend to stay quiet because of ego or because of the fear of being called weakling or what the society will say.
“I can bet, if we gather men in one room and tell them to say what they are passing through in the hands of their women, y’all will relax and cry for men too.
“Men also deserve peace and good treatment just as women deserve same.
“No one is above the other when it comes to peace and good treatment.
“Women are seriously blowing their men’s eye leaving plenty colour inside. Reality check.”
