The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has explained that the Tax Reform Bill was not submitted to the National Economic Council (NEC) before forwarding it to the National Assembly.

Governor Makinde said NEC demanded the withdrawal of the Bill because they wanted to know what was contained in the bill for giving their approval.

He stated this on Saturday in an online interview with residents of Oyo State across his social media platforms tagged #AskSeyiMakinde.

The bill was brought to the National Economic Council (NEC) to approve and we asked for the bill and they said it is already at the National Assembly. So, we said why bring it to us to approve when you already sent it to the National Assembly? So, we asked for it to be withdrawn for wider consultations and alignment. I was the spokesperson but it was a unanimous decision of NEC,” he said.

The Oyo State Governor emphasized that the Tax Reform Bill is good. He noted that it was time such reform took place.

He further stressed the need for more consultations with stakeholders to ensure. “My own position is that reform is good. You can’t keep doing things the same way and expect different results. But even when you are pushing for reforms, you have to have alignment with stakeholders so consultation is important,” he added.
