The Lagos State Government has explained that the closure of the Agege abattoir market was prompted by unsafe and unhygienic practices observed among traders operating within the facility.
The market was sealed on Thursday following an inspection by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who shared details of the exercise on his X page.
In an accompanying video, Wahab revealed that the decision was informed by the discovery that some individuals were sleeping in the market alongside animals—an act he described as unacceptable.
While addressing traders, Wahab emphasized that he was acting on official directives from the state government.
“It’s not going to work. The government sent me here, and I’ve delivered the message. I am shutting it down until the right measures are in place.
“People cannot be sleeping in an animal field; it’s not going to work. Let’s try to do things properly. When it’s shut, someone will be forced to sit down and rethink,” Wahab stated in the video.
The Agege abattoir is one of several markets in Lagos State recently sealed for environmental violations.
