Wicked: For Good’s theatrical release is less than one month away. As the story comes to a close, fans have speculated that more content might be on the way. Now, the film’s director, Jon M. Chu, has finally weighed in on whether there will be more on-screen adaptations in the foreseeable future.

Chu revealed that he currently has no plans to make another Wicked film or any sort of project for the franchise. When asked if there would be a spinoff in an interview with Telemundo’s reporter and producer, Irasema Torres, he responded, “As far as I know, this was always meant to be a two-movie experience.

However, while his answer wasn’t very promising, it wasn’t a firm no. The director didn’t completely crush the dreams of viewers who wanted to see more of the Broadway hit outside of musical theater. He added, “You never know. People want that, but they have to see movie two first. Maybe the audience could tell us.”

Chu went on to explain that the two-part musical is “a journey over a year of time. Everyone can take this era, bring their friends, their family, and get to know these women. Dress up like them and be like them, be inspired by them.” He then stated once again that while he considered the sequel to be “the end of an era,” there is always a chance he would change his mind and create something else. And, he teased hopeful fans by repeating himself, “You never know.”

Wicked: For Good is the second installment of the film adaptation. The movie will take place after Elphaba finds out the Wizard of Oz is lying to the public, telling them he has powers when he doesn’t. It will star Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard of Oz), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Marissa Bode (Nessarose), and Bowen Yang (Pfannee).

Wicked: For Good will be released in theaters on November 21, 2025.
