LAIKA Studios has officially released a behind-the-scenes trailer for their upcoming stop-motion animated movie, Wildwood.

The creators of Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls have released a new trailer for their movie, Wildwood, set to release sometime in 2026 after being rescheduled due to delays. The movie is adapted from the Wildwood Chronicles book series written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis.

The animated dark fantasy movie directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) and written by Chris Butler (Missing Link, ParaNorman) will follow the adventures of Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) as she sets out on an adventure to the forests outside Portland in hopes of finding her kidnapped brother, Mac. He is abducted by a murder of crows into the Impassable Wilderness, and Prue, with her classmate Curtis, discovers a magical realm which is even more complex than they could have imagined.

The star-studded cast includes Carey Mulligan, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, and Richard E. Grant. Six-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel has also joined the project. LAIKA chief marketing and operations officer Dave Burke has stated, “This is our most ambitious film yet.” It will feature 136 locations, 231 practical puppets, and 54 hero characters.

The film was in development as early as 2011, which is shortly after Meloy’s book series was released. However, it wasn’t officially confirmed until 2021. LAIKA Studios is known for its stunningly breathtaking visuals and jaw-dropping process behind some of the most recognizable animated movies enjoyed by all ages. LAIKA’s debut movie Coraline, put them on the map and earned an Oscar nomination.

LAIKA’s founder and Wildwood director, Knight, has been focused on other projects lately, including Amazon’s live-action Masters of the Universe, which is set to release on June 5 next year . Unfortunately, the studio’s last movie, Missing Link, was a flop and brought in only $26.5 million despite costing $100 million to create. Knight has stated that the upcoming movie Wildwood is perhaps “the hardest thing we have ever done” and “it’s incredibly ambitious.”

There is no official release date for the stop-motion adaptation, Wildwood, but it will be released next year.
