The six-clawed hero known as Wolverine just introduced a secret wife fans never knew he had, and she’s just as big of a badass as he is. With his unbreakable claws and bright yellow costume, Wolverine is one of Marvel’s true icons, but that doesn’t mean he can’t keep a few secrets from his fans.
Marvel Introduces Wolverine Wife: The Vindicator
Logan’s Romance with Heather Hudson Returns
In today’s The Last Wolverine #1 – from Saladin Ahmed, Edgar Salazar, Carlos Lopez and Cory Petit – Marvel jumps ahead ten years in X-Men lore. Part of the Age of Revelation event, Logan has been brainwashed into becoming Revelation’s enforcer (aka the Angel of Death) while his former protégé – the wendigo Leonard – has become the new Wolverine. At the end of the issue, Leonard is contacted by Heather McNeil’s Vindicator, who reveals that she married Logan during the comic’s time-jump.
A former ally on Canada’s Alpha Flight team, Heather always had a flirtation with Wolverine, but he left the team rather than endanger her marriage to James Hudson, the original Vindicator. During the ten-year time jump, Heather took back the Vindicator name and married Logan, leaving the Revelation territories after he was brainwashed. Now, she’s back with a deadly mission.
Only Wolverine’s Wife Can Save Him from Revelation
Age of Revelation takes place in a future where the villainous Revelation – aka Doug Ramsey – has taken control of America, spreading a virus that has killed the majority of humans. Revelation has used his hypnotic voice to recruit key X-Men heroes to his side, while a few rebel heroes fight on to bring him down. The X-Virus even changed the environment, making it far harder for humans to survive.
Despite this fact, Heather’s Vindicator has survived for years outside Revelation’s kingdom, and has apparently found a way to free Wolverine from his control, despite the fact that Revelation’s ‘Choristers’ intensify his powers to godlike levels. So far, Wolverine has attempted to kill his old allies on the X-Men and Leonard himself, showing that his former identity is seemingly totally gone.
Now, allied with the new Wolverine and a de-powered Nightcrawler, Vindicator will attempt to track down one of the deadliest men ever born to win back his heroic side. However, it’s not totally hopeless. The Vindicator suit grants its wearer enhanced strength and durability, supersonic flight and various electromagnetic weaponry. Added to the will power of Wolverine’s wife, successor and best friend, it may just be enough.
Wolverine’s Family Is Undergoing More Changes Than a Surprise Wife
Age of Revelation has made several changes to Wolverine’s family alongside Heather becoming his wife. Wolverine’s daughter Laura Kinney had a child during the time skip with Sabretooth’s heroic son, binding the two bloodlines together. Sadly, Wolverine’s brainwashing has stopped him truly knowing his grandson, or stopping the fracturing of his children’s relationship.
While the Age of Revelation may be rendered non-canon at the end of the event, its predictions of future events – some just a few years in the future – will doubtless influence future stories. Heather had all but been forgotten as a Wolverine love interest, but The Last Wolverine may yet make a convincing argument that her marriage to Logan should still be in the characters’ future.
