Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Amazing X-Men #1!
The latest casualty of X-Men’s dystopian Age of Revelation future is Deathdream, the powerful new mutant hero who has been central to the current volume of Uncanny X-Men. The series confirms Deathdream as a legitimate mutant hero, who sticks with the team through the worst decade in mutant history, but the crossover quickly dispatches the hero in a shocking moment.
Amazing X-Men #1 is written by Jed MacKay, with art by Mahmud Asmar. The turning point in the issue comes when Revelation unleashes his “Angel of Death,” Wolverine, on his former X-Men allies.
What follows is a vicious slaughter, which includes Deathdream going down fighting against his deadly former mentor.
Deathdream’s Brutal Death At Wolverine’s Hands Just Uped The Stakes Of Marvel’s “Age Of Revelation”

Deathdream is one of the “Outliers,” a group of brand-new mutant characters introduced at the start of Gail Simone’s current Uncanny X-Men run. Notably, his powers allow him to move fluidly between life and death, even more than the resurrection-happy X-Men are used to. Deathdream has even exhibited the ability to revive after seemingly being killed.
So, it is possible that the hero’s demise in Amazing X-Men #1 is not the end of his Age of Revelation story arc. At the same time, the Revelation crossover is expected to have a high attrition rate, and the body count has already started to pile up, and if the series doesn’t have any other plans for him, this might be it.
However, it’s fair to say that whatever happens next, this is Deathdream’s most horrifying death yet in his brief Marvel history. Wolverine ruthlessly decapitates the young hero, after Deathdream boldly chooses to confront the former hero. It is a graphic, unsettling moment, even if the character does manage to survive this latest “death.”
This Isn’t The End For Marvel’s Powerful New Mutant Hero Deathdream
The Hero’s Powers Suggest A Return Is Likely
Moments before Wolverine cuts off Deathdream’s head, Cyclops recognizes him from ten years earlier, noting that the mutant hero “look[s] exactly the same.” “Of course I do,” Deathdream replies, pointing out that “the dead seldom age.” This is perhaps the best evidence that Deathdream’s role in Age of Revelation won’t end with Amazing X-Men #1.
Whatever happens, Deathdream goes out in dramatic fashion, admitting to Cyclops that he’s “not afraid of dying,” but that he is “afraid of [Wolverine].” In what could potentially be his “final” moments, Deathdream faces this fear, and stands toe-to-toe with Wolverine, in a moment where his potential as an X-Men hero is fully realized.
There is always a nebulous quality when heroes have power over life and death itself, and as such, Deathdream’s fate is far from sealed. Regarded as one of the most powerful new mutants added to X-Men canon over the last several years, even if his Age of Revelation tenure was brief, fans certainly haven’t heard the last of Deathdream.
